Making a small town gather big income
The Local Government Support Program of Philippine-Canada was established in this country long enough. This organiztion helps one organization, or one community in providing primary needs like shelter, water, food, and even financial assistance. Many people might think that LGSP is just another organization that does nothing good but it’s actually the other way around. As a matter of fact, one community was successfully helped by the LGSP – the Naawan Misamis Oriental.
Naawan is a fifth class agricultural municipality in Misamis Oriental province. Economic growth has been slow to come to the corridor and Naawan has not benefited well from economic activities of their area. This has prompted the Local Government Unit of Naawan to seek help to make more income in the town. In the year 2003, Naawan founded LGSP and quickly participated in the organization’s program. As a result, the Local Government Unit created a Municipal Economic Enterprise and Development Office (MEEDO) in September of the same year. The purpose of creating MEEDO is to efficiently coordinate and manage all public economic enterprises in Naawan.
MEEDO’s main task includes the following:
Billing and collection
Keeping complete records
Monitoring misconduct
Maintaining facilities and buildings of various LGU-managed public economic enterprises like slaughter house, public market and water system
Since then, the public economic enterprise management in Naawan has improved. Their water system has expanded their service and can now deliver in remote areas in their town. Naawan also became a place for workers because they’ve put up a lot of businesses and establishments that gave many job opportunities to many Filipino workers. Because of this project, Naawan municipality was also able to make more income that helped them improve their living. Truly, LGSP’s help makes them to be a better community.
The community’s success will not be possible if LGU wasn’t there. In return, people also helped the organizations to build establishments. It’s like putting the essense of “Bayanihan” for a faster job. Today, the community is doing great, all because if LGSP’s effort to help Naawan.
