REGION VI: WESTERN VISAYAS
Regional Thrust:
To support the regional development goals of poverty reduction and economic development through sustainable agriculture and tourism and improved provision of basic services through good local governance.
Regional Overview:
The primary consideration of the program during its initial phase in 1992 to 1998 was directed towards the major structural and systems adjustments experienced by the Local Government Units, and their difficulty in coping with the mandates of the Local Government Code. Given this concern, Region VI decided to initiate and pursue basic capacity development interventions in all Local Government Units in the region. Regional concerns were also given importance. The Region’s major development thrusts include: poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and agriculture. Tourism development was, likewise, integrated in the program. During the first phase, LGSP assisted 6 provinces, 2 highly urbanized cities and 131 municipalities and component cities in the region.
Currently, Region VI has a total of 36 Local Government Units covered with 33 of them assisted since the beginning of the program.
